Rat Adoption Information
We welcome ANY questions you may have, especially if these will be your first ratties. We like everyone that adopts our rats to be well informed about their care and are more than willing to guide adopters through the learning process.
Our support doesn't end when adopters pick up their rats. We offer a lifetime of support, advice, access to safe rat products and food, and vet referrals. Don't hesitate to contact us with questions for the life of your rats.
How to Adopt Ratties from Ratty Rat Rattery
Step One: Contact Us
If you are interested in adopting from our rattery, please email us and submit
Adoption Questionnaire,
Step Two: Adopt Now or Later
Check out our Nursery and Available Rat Page to see if we have any ratties available that you would like to adopt
(A Friendly Reminder: we only adopt out ratties in same sex pairs)
OR
If we don't have the ratties your looking for available now, you can request to be placed on our wait list for one of our planned, expected, or very young litters, you can request male or female preference, however I do NOT take down color/coat/ear type requests, I simply cannot guarantee specific colors or other physical characteristics will be available.
Please note that the physical characteristics of a rat has absolutely no effect on the temperament and personality of that rat, in fact things like color/eye color/coat type are the last thing I take into account when planning a litter of babies, so in turn cannot make any commitments or promises to what the physical appearance of the rats in any litter will look like. If you do not see rats that are the color you wanted available in the litter you are wait listed for, let me know and I will remove you from the wait list.
**There is now a $5 deposit to be placed on our wait list, this is to avoid adopters backing out when we are counting on them as homes for our babies. The $5 fee is a refundable deposit, only if we do not produce the litter, or enough babies (male or female) that the adopter is on the wait list for**
The Deposit can be paid through Paypal (to Rattyratrattery@gmail.com), and goes towards the total adoption fee for the adopted rats
OR
Keep an eye out on our Nursery Page for new litters, and Friend us on Facebook, as I post new litter announcements and pictures of new babies
Step Three: Pick Out Your Ratties!
I start taking reservations on babies at 5 weeks of age, sometimes older, and babies are weaned and ready to go home at 6 weeks of age.
Once I post pictures of all the individual babies, I begin asking folks on the wait list to pick out their rats, in the order I received their $5 Wait list deposit. Once I email a person on the wait list, asking for their choices, they have 48 hours to respond (though sooner is greatly appreciated).
If I don't receive a response from someone on the waitlist within 48 hours, I skip to the next person.
Once you reserve ratties, I require a $5.oo deposit per rat, which can be paid through Paypal or Google Checkout. If I do not receive the deposit within 48 hours, the rat(s) will be placed as available again or offered to the next person on the wait list.
Step Four: Pick Up Your Ratties!
Arrange a pick up time by emailing me directly to schedule a time to pick up your ratties after their weaning date.
All rat pick ups take place at Sabre Spring Park, San Diego, CA, 92128 (see below for directions)
I will only hold rats one week past their pick up dates, at which time they will be placed as available again, unless another arrangement is made. There are no refunds on adoption deposits.
Rats will go home with a small amount of Harlan Teklad lab blocks (what they are used to eating), but we highly recommend you continue this diet, and we have Harlan Teklad available for purchase on our web store, Everything Rats. (it is not something you can find in pet stores).

Adoption Policies
Ratties must be adopted in same sex pairs, unless you already have other ratties of the same sex.
- RRR always has Pick of the Litter rights, occasionally other ratteries may have second pick of the litter.
- RRR is a "closed rattery", meaning I cannot allow anyone into my rattery, as it could introduce disease to my rats, and I'm not willing to take that risk. Please feel free to ask any questions or request pictures.
- All adopters must sign an adoption contract.
- Adopters may not transfer ownership without my permission, "set free", or give up ratties to a vet, rescue, or animal shelter, etc. If you can no longer care for your ratties, you must return them to RRR.
- Adopters may not use pine or cedar bedding, it is toxic to rats.
- If you will be a first time rat owner, I must preapprove your ratties cage, food, and bedding.
- RRR reserves the right to refuse adoptions to anyone.
